Charles R Walter 1520 Upright Piano

One of only three piano companies still manufacturing in the USA, the Walter Piano Company was founded in 1969 by engineer and piano designer Charles R. Walter in Elkhart, Indiana, USA where they operate to this day. Charles R. Walter pianos are without a doubt, one of the most innovative and high-quality boutique instruments produced in modern times. Most famous is their line of console/studio upright pianos featuring advanced long string scale designs that enable them to perform on the same level as much larger pianos. Every instrument that leaves their small-scale production factory is personally signed and inspected by a member of the Walter family and inscribed with a certificate of quality. Charles R. Walter pianos are some of the most rare and sought after pianos on the market for good reason.

Design
The Charles R. Walter 1520 was designed to provide the best possible performance in the confines of a small traditional cabinet. Despite a height of only 43 ½" tall, it features the same string length as 5 foot 7 inch grand piano. To accommodate such a long string scale, part of the cast iron frame is cleverly notched into the bottom board.

The 1520's soundboard is the largest that can be found in any upright piano of its size with an area of 37" x 56". Larger in size than most 5 foot 10 inch grand piano soundboards.

Tone
The tone quality of this piano is truly spectacular. The rich and powerful bass smoothly transfers to a bold and bell-like treble with no noticeable break between bass and tenor. When you play this instrument it's hard to remember you're playing on a compact upright and not a grand.

Touch
Unlike most compact uprights the Charles R. Walter 1520 features a full-sized direct blow action. For maximum control and evenness of touch, each key is individually weighted with lead and extended to grand piano length. Key length is one of the most important factors that separate uprights from grands.

Craftsmanship
As a fine American-made piano only the best and most suitable materials are used regardless of cost!

Hammers - Reinforced Australian felt, double-layered and moth proofed
Soundboard - Solid tight-grain Bavarian or Sitka spruce - tapered from bass to treble for optimal acoustic performance. Contoured acoustical reflectors to improve tone & sustain
Bridges - Notched on both front and rear for maximum sound transference
Pinblock - 29 Ply German Delignet made of quarter-sawn Beech for maximum tuning stability and durability
Backpost - 5 Extra thick sold spruce backpost for a rigid and stable foundation
Piano Plate - Extra dense cast iron to support the 20 tons of tension from the strings
Cabinet - 5 Ply lumbercore (not MDF) with solid wood mouldings finished in numerous layers of stain and lacquer.
